Who has to take the citizenship exam?＋
Anyone applying for Swedish citizenship who is between 16 and 66 years old and cannot show knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society in another way (for example through approved grades). You can only register after receiving a letter from Migrationsverket specifically directing you to do so.
Who is exempt?＋
Among others, those who have turned 67, those with a permanent disability that makes the requirement unreasonable, stateless people born in Sweden who apply before turning 21, and Nordic citizens.
How is the exam designed?＋
The exam is in Swedish, taken on paper, and consists of multiple-choice questions with four answer options where one is correct. No aids or translations are provided.
What does the exam cost?＋
The first exam sitting, in August 2026, was free of charge. From exams held during 2027 onward, a fee of 2,000 kronor per sitting applies, according to UHR.
What language is the exam in?＋
The exam is given only in Swedish. A separate exam in the Swedish language is planned but has not started yet.
What happens if I don't pass the exam?＋
UHR states that you may get the opportunity to show your knowledge again. Contact Migrationsverket for the exact rules regarding retakes in your specific case.
