New citizenship rules from 6 June 2026
On 6 June 2026, new, stricter rules for Swedish citizenship, decided by the Riksdag, came into effect.
The new rules include, among other things, longer residency requirements, requirements for good conduct, requirements to be able to support yourself financially, and requirements for knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society.
The rules apply without transitional provisions: Migrationsverket assesses all applications under the new rules after 6 June 2026, even if the application was submitted earlier and had not yet been decided.
Other changes that also apply from 6 June concern who can make a declaration (instead of an application) for citizenship, as well as a possibility for certain people who previously lost their citizenship to apply to get it back. Children must now submit their own application, with the help of their guardian.
