Knowledge requirements in Swedish and society

Since 6 June 2026, knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society is required to become a citizen. The requirement applies to those between 16 and 66 years old.

The knowledge can be shown, for example, through grades from Swedish compulsory or upper-secondary school, studies at komvux (municipal adult education) or a folk high school, or a passing grade in Swedish for Immigrants (SFI, course D).

Anyone who cannot show the knowledge through approved grades can instead take the citizenship exam. The exam is being introduced in stages — civics first, from August 2026, and later an exam in Swedish.
