Requirements for good conduct and self-support

Anyone who has committed a crime must wait a certain qualifying period before citizenship can be granted. This qualifying period has been extended under the new rules.

Since 6 June 2026, you must also be able to support yourself through your own income, equivalent to at least three income base amounts per year — about 20,000 kronor a month before tax. The income must come from non-subsidized employment or business activity, you must not have received financial assistance for more than a total of six months over the past three years, and your self-support must be stable over time.

Income from a partner, assets (such as savings or property), and temporary employment do not count as meeting the self-support requirement.

Certain groups may be exempt from the self-support requirement, for example old-age pensioners, people with a permanent disability, and full-time students with approved results in an education leading to a degree at a university or university college.
