Residency requirement

As a main rule, you must have lived in Sweden for at least 8 years (previously 5 years) to become a Swedish citizen.

Shorter time limits apply to certain groups: 2 years for Nordic citizens or former Swedish citizens; 5 years for stateless persons (previously 4 years); 7 years for refugees (previously 4 years); 7 years for those under 21; and 7 years for those married to, a registered partner of, or cohabiting with a Swedish citizen (previously 3 years) — provided the couple has been together for at least five years and the Swedish partner has held citizenship for at least five years.

Anyone who cannot prove their identity can be granted citizenship at the earliest after 10 years in Sweden.
