New citizenship rules

Regaining citizenship

Certain people who previously lost their Swedish citizenship — for example at age 22 because they were born abroad and never lived in or had a close connection to Sweden — can from 6 June 2026 apply to get it back.

Migrationsverket can grant this if the loss of citizenship is deemed to have had disproportionate consequences for the applicant or family members in Sweden or another EU country. Only circumstances that occurred before age 22 are taken into account.
